Before installing Lucid :

Backup pidgin logs located in ~/.purple/logs

mkdir ~/backup_pidgin
cp -dfr ~/.purple/logs ~/backup_pidgin

After your Lucid successfully installed, then think what packages you should remove and what packages you should install. In my opinion, default games in Ubuntu is not important, so I remove it all. Then I don’t like these packages :

1. brasero. I don’t need to burning DVD.
2. transmission-common. This package used for sharing file thru torrent service. I need package like this, but I choose vuze.
3. f-spot. I like digiKam.
4. empathy. I like pidgin.
5. gwibber. I don’t need this social microblog package.

sudo apt-get purge -y --force-yes brasero transmission-common aisleriot quadrapassel gnomine gnome-sudoku gnome-mahjongg gnome-games-common gbrainy f-spot empathy

Something missing?

Think what you need… Multimedia? Programming? Graphic? Internet?
Add these repositories into your Lucid :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pidgin-developers/ppa
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable

And Add this line to your /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ lucid free non-free

Before installing it all, let’s upgrade our system :

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y --force-yes
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y --force-yes

So now, let’s start from multimedia task. If you want to watching HD video, XBMC is what you need. XBMC not only video player, but also audio player and photo viewer. I also love VLC for watching small video eace:, audacious for listening music, and cheese for webcam. lives is for video editing.

sudo apt-get install -y --force-yes ubuntu-restricted-extras
sudo apt-get install -y --force-yes xbmc xbmc-standalone vlc audacious cheese lives

In Graphic section, I need inkscape for draw vector image, gimp for photo editing, dia for draw diagram, and digiKam for manage my photo collection.

sudo apt-get install -y --force-yes inkscape gimp dia digikam

Internet
Filezilla is for FTP transfer, vuze for torrent transfer, pidgin for chat. Google Earth for your holiday eace:

sudo apt-get install -y --force-yes filezilla keepassx vuze pidgin googleearth

Programming?
Geany is my lovely text exitor. Qt Creator is IDE to build Qt application. Qgis is an open source geographic information system software.

sudo apt-get install -y --force-yes geany qtcreator qgis

Any other?
Stellarium is a planetarium in your desktop. Tilda is terminal but we can hide and show it by pressing F1 key. Install Virtualbox if you want to install another operating system inside your machine. Shutter is advanced screen capture program. Blueman manage your bluetooth. CCSM to manage your desktop effect, Gparted is partition manager in linux.

sudo apt-get install -y --force-yes stellarium tilda tomboy keepassx virtualbox-ose shutter wine blueman compizconfig-settings-manager gparted

I googled and finally found this bug in Network Manager 0.8.
The solution is downgrading your network manager. But I didn’t know how to downgrade packages in Ubuntu without disabling my apt line that linked to the latest version of packages. If you wanna try, this may be a good tutorial. And, if you downgrade your Network Manager by following tutorial from community help, you can start by Installing dependencies then Make your Karmic automatically eject your EVDO modem each computer start and so on.

Add these lines into your /etc/sources.list :

#network manager

Downgrading your Network Manager from 0.8 to 0.7 :
Killing Network Manager applet and Network Manager itself :

sudo killall nm-applet
sudo killall NetworkManager

Completely Removing Modem Manager and Network Manager :

sudo apt-get purge modemmanager network-manager*

Installing dependencies :

sudo apt-get install libpolkit-dbus2 libpolkit2 libpolkit-gnome0 libpolkit-grant2

If you downgrading your network manager following instruction from Community help, please continue reading Make your Karmic automatically eject your EVDO modem each computer start.

Disable all apt line in /etc/apt/sources.list, and add these two lines :

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

Updating package list :

sudo apt-get update

Installing Network Manager 0.7 :

sudo apt-get install network-manager network-manager-gnome

Restart your system :

sudo reboot

Make your Karmic automatically eject your EVDO modem each computer start :
Create a new file /etc/udev/rules.d/99-evdo-modem.rules, and fill it with :

SYSFS{idVendor}=="201e", SYSFS{idProduct}=="2009", RUN+="/usr/bin/eject %k"

Note : My 99-evdo-modem.rules file can only handle Haier CE100 EVDO modem. If you have different modem, change 0x201e using your modem vendorID, and 0×2009 using your productID.
To check your vendorID and productID of your modem, do :

lsusb

In my Karmic, the results of lsusb command are :

Now, try to plug in your EVDO modem, if it doesn’t appear in Network Manager applet, try to hack your kernel :

Try this only if your Karmic doesn’t detect your modem :

apt-get install linux-source linux-headers-generic build-essential
cd /usr/src
tar xjf linux-source-2.6.31.tar.bz2

Replace your option.c file (located in /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31/drivers/usb/serial/option.c) using this one : download my option.c.
The difference between yours and mine in line 587 because I’ve added this line into the file:

{ USB_DEVICE(0x201e, 0x2009) },

Note : My option.c file can only add support to handle Haier CE100 EVDO modem. If you have different modem, change 0x201e using your modem vendorID, and 0×2009 using your productID.

Back to your terminal, and run the following command :

cd linux-source-2.6.31
cp /boot/config-$(uname -r) /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31/.config
make menuconfig

Again, restart your computer, then plug in your EVDO modem, if Karmic doesn’t detect, please continue…
Replace your 10-modem.fdi file (/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10-modem.fdi) using mine, download here. The differences is in lines 82-89. Again, if your modem is not Haier CE100 EVDO modem, replace it’s vendorID and productID using yours.

That’s all…, now restart your computer then plug in your EVDO modem and enjoy .

ps : dont forget to enable your apt line in /etc/apt/sources.list.

Tilda (a Linux terminal alternative)

Tilda is a Linux terminal taking after the likeness of many classic terminals from first person shooter games, Quake, Doom and Half-Life to name a few, where the terminal has no border and is hidden from the desktop till a key or keys is hit.
Tilda has many features for you :

• Key binding to show and hide tilda. This is very useful, because we not always need terminal program, but when need it, just press the key binding (I’m using F9 to bind it).

Here we go. I made this post based on my experience installing Apache 2, MySQL 5.1, and PHP 5.2 from apt-get and always get error when installing MySQL 5.1. Then I must install them from sources.

Before we begin, make sure you already download source of Apache 2, MySQL 5.1, and PHP 5.2.

Download Apache HTTP Server
Download MySQL Server
Download PHP

After the download completed, lets install them…

Assume this installation guide using :
Apache HTTP Server version 2.2.13
MySQL Server version 5.1.39
PHP version 5.2.11

If you get different version, just replace it’s version number

This code is ready to use, you can just paste it into your terminal/console.

Install Mysql 5.1
Open terminal, and change the directory to the download folder.
Do the following command :

#!/bin/bash
###login as root :
sudo su

###extract it :
tar -zxvf mysql-5.1.39.tar.gz

###change to the mysql extraction directory :
cd mysql-5.1.39

###adding mysql group :
groupadd mysql

###adding mysql user :
useradd mysql -g mysql

###create a directory for mysql pid file :
mkdir /var/run/mysqld

###change its owner to mysql :
chown -R mysql.mysql /var/run/mysqld

###create a directory for mysql data :
mkdir /var/mysqldata

###copying mysql.server file to /etc/init.d/mysql in order to automatically starting mysql-server each computer start :

Install PHP 5.2
Open terminal, and change the directory to the download folder.
Do the following command :

sudo su

###extract it :
tar -zxvf php-5.2.11.tar.gz

###change to the PHP extraction directory :
cd php-5.2.11

###configure it :
./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-mysql --with-mysqli --with-gd --enable-gd-native-ttf --enable-json --enable-zip --enable-mbstring --with-mcrypt --disable-ipv6 --enable-calendar --with-config-file-path=/usr/local/etc --enable-exif --enable-magic-quotes --with-zlib --with-iconv --with-freetype-dir=/usr --with-jpeg-dir=/usr --with-png-dir=/usr --with-bz2

###make it :
make

###install it :
make install

Finally, start Apache HTTP Server manually :

/etc/init.d/httpd start

Now, you can test your installation by typing

http://localhost/

in your favorite browser. If it displays It works!, it must be success!
Not : Place your PHP or HTML files to

/usr/local/apache2/htdocs

Sometimes when you open The Gimp, it shows 3 window list (main window, toolbox window, and docks window) in the panel. It happen because you are activating compiz and not setting it yet.

This is very wasful space and not eye catching in your panel.

To solve it just follow the step I found from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=466622 :

1. Open your terminal
2. Type :

   $ gconftool-2 -s /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/active_plugins --type=list --list-type=string `gconftool-2 -g /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/active_plugins | sed 's/\]//'`,winrules]
   $ gconftool-2 -s /apps/compiz/plugins/winrules/screen0/options/skiptaskbar_match --type string "type=Utility"

   Or follow this step :

   1. Open your CompizConfig Setting Manager (System -> Preferences -> CompizConfig Setting Manager). If you didn’t find it, install it by typing sudo apt-get install compizconfig-setting-manager in your terminal.
   2. Activate Window Rules and then open it.
      
   3. Type : type=Utility in the Skip Taskbar field.
      

   After restarting Gimp you should saw The Gimp only have one item in the window list panel.

Bicara soal web-based application, tentu tak lepas dari peran serta web browser, yang digunakan untuk mengakses aplikasi itu sendiri. Mozilla Firefox merupakan web browser paling banyak dipakai pengembang untuk membuat aplikasi web-based, selain open source, juga karena dukungan add-ons yang luar biasa dari para pengembang.

Penggunaan browser itu sendiri juga menjadi salah satu keterbatasan pengembangan web application. Sebagian aplikasi tidak membutuhkan fitur-fitur yang terdapat pada browser yang hanya memperbesar memory yang digunakan untuk menjalankan browser itu sendiri.

Namun, keterbatasan itu kini telah terpatahkan dengan hadirnya Mozilla Prism. Prism tak lain juga merupakan sebuah web browser berbasiskan Firefox, akan tetapi dapat dimodifikasi sesuai kebutuhan kita.

Kelebihan penggunaan Prism dibanding menggunakan Firefox untuk web application kita diantaranya adalah :

1. Web application kita jadi mirip desktop application .
2. Menghemat memory. Berikut screenshoot dari Firefox dan Prism dengan membuka halaman yang sama. .
3. Memisahkan window aplikasi kita dengan website yang dikunjungi user.
4. Kita dapat mendefinisikan sendiri kombinasi tombol keyboard (misalnya F1 untuk menampilkan help).
5. Dan masih banyak lagi kelebihan yang dapat Anda temukan sendiri di Prism .

Prism tersedia dalam bentuk standalone installer maupun add-ons Firefox. Apakah Anda tau Zimbra? yay, Zimbra menggunakan Prism!

Mungkin ini agak mengganggu, dan boros-borosin space taskbar saja. Sebenarnya, window list ini hanya tampil 1 saja kalo kita ga ngaktifin compiz, jadi permasalahannya adalah pada compiz yang tidak menyembunyikan Utility window.

Kalo mau (kalo ga mau ya ga usah dibaca mas) menyembunyikan 2 window selain main window coba cara berikut. Namun sebelumnya, pastikan setingan 2 window tersebut termasuk Utility window, caranya melihat setingannya :

Buka Gimp, dari menu Edit -> Preferences ->  Windows Management. Pada kolom Hint for the toolbox dan Hint for the docks pastikan isinya Utility window (sebenernya ini udah seting default Gimp).

Selanjutnya ada 2 cara untuk menyembunyikan Utility window tersebut. Cara 1 saya dapat dari https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=466622, yaitu dengan cara :

Buka konsole, ketikkan (mending kopi paste) :

1. gconftool-2 -s /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/active_plugins --type=list --list-type=string `gconftool-2 -g /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/active_plugins | sed 's/\]//'`,winrules]
2. gconftool-2 -s /apps/compiz/plugins/winrules/screen0/options/skiptaskbar_match --type string "type=Utility"

Cara ke-2, menggunakan CompizConfig Setting Manager, yaitu :

1. System -> Preferences -> CompizConfig Setting Manager -> Window Management
2. Aktifkan Window Rules (dicentangin)

   

3. Pada kolom Skip taskbar (paling atas mas), tuliskan : type=Utility
   
4. Tutup CompizConfig Setting Manager

Selesai mas, sekarang coba buka Gimpnya.

Untuk pemakaian listrik, monitor LCD jelas lebih ngirit. Monitor LCD BenQ FP71 G+S (17″ mengkonsumsi listrik 40 watt(max), sedangkan CRT 15″ yang dulu saya gunakan membutuhkan daya 65 watt. Jadi LCD lebih ngirit listrik daripada CRT, hal ini akan terasa jika jumlah komputer yang digunakan banyak.
Berdasar salah satu komentar di blognya mister Priyadi, monitor CRT warnanya lebih baik dan benar, jadi jika Anda seorang desainer, disarankan menggunakan monitor konde(CRT). Namun jika Anda seorang programmer(yang biasanya mojok di t4 gelap dan 2 hari 2 malam tidak beranjak dari depan komputer), saya sarankan menggunakan LCD, karena lebih aman dari radiasi u/ mata Anda.

Meskipun berdasar pertimbangan2 diatas Anda sudah menentukan untuk memilih monitor mana yang sesuai untuk Anda, namun hal yang paling menentukan dalam hidup Anda adalah uang Anda, xixixixi. Harga minimal untuk monitor LCD berkelas sekitar 1.5jt (15″. Untuk duit segitu, Anda sudah bisa mendapatkan CRT 17″. Dan monitor LCD 17″ harga berkisar 2 jt-an, untuk dana segitu, Anda sudah bisa mendapatkan Core 2 Duo E6300 Allendale 1.86, hehehe…, opo hubungane jal?

Adalah maximum resolusi yang bisa ditampilkan. Untuk LCD 17″ biasanya bisa mencapai 1280×1024.

Brightness.
Semakin besar Brightness, semakin bagus LCD

Contrass Ratio.
Perbandingan antara hitam yang paling gelap dan putih yang paling terang. Semakin tinggi perbandingan, warna yang ditampilkan semakin detil. Jadi semakin tinggi perbadingan, maka LCD smakin bagus.

Response Time.
Adalah waktu yang dibutuhkan dari kondisi on ke off(falling time) dan off ke on(raising time). Falling time yang lambat biasanya meninggalkan ghosting time di layar(warna putih berbentuk titik). Response time biasanya digunakan u/ aplikasi yang bergerak cepat(game). Semakin kecil Response time, semakin bagus monitor LCD.

Viewing Angle.
Adalah maximum sudut untuk melihat monitor dengan tetap mempertahankan isi tampilan. semakin besar viewing angle, meskipun Anda harus melihat monitor dari belakang-pun, tetep keliatan tuh yang ditampilkan, asal pake cermin, xixixi…, jk.

Input Signal.
Saat ini, colokan monitor ada 2 jenis(es far es ai no), yaitu VGA dan DVI. DVI lebih baru dari-pada VGA. Katanya DVI bisa menampilkan gambar lebih baik untuk monitor LCD(kalo ini belum saya coba). Yang jelas, DVI lebih modern dab!.

Oh, ya, jangan lupa perhatikan lama garansinya loh…

Cek spek2 tersebut pada masing2 vendor, karena toko (di jogja) jarang memiliki spek monitor LCD. Yang menghasilkan monitor antara lain : LG, BenQ, Prolink, GTC, dan ViewSonic. Untuk referensi harga, silakan cek di bhinneka.com atau telpon toko komputer sekitar Anda (ga ada salahnya kok klo cuma bertanya…
Namun, secara bodhon, dalam memilih suatu barang adalah “Ono rego ono rupo”, xixixi, ga usah bingung2 liat spek, asal dana tak terbatas, barang yang bagus pasti didapat.

Sekedar berbagi pengalaman, saya menggunakan BenQ FP71 G+S dengan VGA nVIDIA GeForce 6150(bawaan DFI Invinity C-51 PV), dengan resolusi 1280×1024(max) menghasilkan gambar lebih halus daripada menggunakan resolusi yang lebih kecil. Untuk resolusi 1152×864 dan dibawahnya, tulisan ataupun gambar masih tampak pecah.

Dan sekali lagi, dana adalah penentu hidup Anda!.

Aturan maen :
1. Tulisan hanya ditujukan untuk FC 5, jika anda menggunakan distro lain, silakan menyesuaikan.
2. Direktori user berada di /home/, sehingga untuk user yoyok direktorinya adalah /home/yoyok/.
3. User web direktori untuk masing-masing user bernama public_html, sehingga file2 webnya agung berada pada direktori /home/agung/public_html/, begitu seterusnya untuk user lain. Jika direktori folder public_html belum terbentuk, silakan buat sendiri secara manual.

OK kita mulai…
Pertama
Buka httpd.conf di direktori /etc/httpd/conf/

Kedua
Cari baris , perhatikan baris2 di bawahnya.
Hapus baris Userdir disable pada tag tersebut.
Hilangkan tanda pagar di depan baris Userdir public_html

Ketiga
Tambahkan baris2 berikut dibawah tag penutup

Perhatian!!!
Perhatikan baris AllowOverride All pada konfigurasi diatas. Hal ini digunakan untuk membaca file .htaccess pada setiap direktori web anda. Jika di set AllowOverride All, maka setiap direktori di bawah /public_html harus memiliki file .htaccess.
Solusi :
1. Buat file .htaccess untuk setiap direktori di bawah public_html
2. Ubah konfigurasi di atas pada baris AllowOverride All menjadi AllowOverride None

Keempat
Restart Apache, dengan mengetikkan : httpd -k restart pada konsole.

Kelima
Buka http://localhost/~agung/ pada browser, maka URL tersebut akan membuka direktori /home/agung/public_html/ pada server.

Keenam
Buka http://localhost/ maka akan mengunjungi direktori default dari DocumentRoot (/var/www/html/)

Ketujuh
Selesai

script PHP. Ini seperti jika kita membuka Cpanel pada website yang ada pada server beneran.

Ketika kita membuka direktori itu, maka akan tampil prompt yang meminta user dan password.
Tutorial ini sudah dicoba beberapa kali dan sukses pada Windows XP SP1, dan pada Fedora Core 5.
Asumsi :
Win = Windows XP
FC = Fedora COre
doc root pada Windows = F:/public_html/
doc root pada FC = /var/www/html/

pertama :
Win : Buat folder dengan nama pwd pada direktori C:/Apache2/
FC : Buat folder dengan nama pwd pada direktori /etc/httpd/

Kedua :
Win : Buka command prompt (cmd) dari Start menu->Run
FC : Buka konsole

Ketiga :
Win : ketikkan htpasswd -c C:/Apache2/pwd/passwords agung
FC : ketikkan htpasswd -c /etc/httpd/pwd/passwords agung

keempat :
Win & FC : Setelah itu, Anda diminta memasukkan password untuk user agung. Masukkan password dan konfirmasi password.

Kelima :
Win : buka httpd.conf pada direktori C:/Apache2/conf/.
FC : buat file dengan nama otentik.conf dan simpan di direktori /etc/httpd/conf.d/

Keenam :
Win : Tambahkan baris2 berikut pada file httpd.conf pada akhir baris :

FC : Tuliskan baris2 diatas pada file otentik.conf dengan mengganti nilai direktori menjadi /var/www/html/test_pwd pada baris 1.

Win : Buat file .htacces pada direktori F:/public_html/test_pwd/
FC : Buat file .htacces pada direktori /var/www/html/test_pwd/

Kedelapan :
Win : Isikan file .htaccess tersebut dengan baris2 berikut :

AuthType Basic
AuthName "Daerah Terlarang"
AuthUserFile C:\\Apache2\\pwd\\passwords
Require user agung
#selesai

FC : Isikan file .htaccess tersebut dengan baris2 diatas dengan mengganti nilai AuthUserFile (baris 3) menjadi /etc/httpd/pwd/passwords

Kesembilan :
Win : Restart Apache Anda, Start menu->Programs->Apache HTTP Server 2.0.58->Control Apache Server->Restart
FC : Restart Apache Anda dengan perintah : service httpd restart (pake konsole)

Kesepuluh :
buka browser, ketikkan : http://localhost/test_pwd, akan tampil prompt permintaan user dan password. Masukkan field user dengan agung da password dengan password yg anda masukkan tadi. Jika login berhasil, maka server akan membuka direktori test_pwd tersebut. Jika Anda memilih cancel, akan tampil error 401.
Jika Anda gagal membuat autentikasi ini, silakan ulangi lagi, pastikan path2nya udah benar.

FC : buat file dengan nama vhost.conf dan simpan di direktori /etc/httpd/conf.d/

Kedua :
Win : tambahkan baris2 berikut pada httpd.conf
FC : isikan baris2 berikut pada vhost.conf

keterangan : pada baris 3 dan 6 sesuaikan dengan document root Anda/ folder yang menyimpan file yang akan diakses lewat virtual host.

Ketiga :
Win : buka file host pada direktori C:/Windows/System32/Driver/etc/
FC : buka file hosts pada direktori /etc/

Keempat :
Win & FC : tambahkan baris berikut pada baris paling bawah :
127.0.0.9 www.virtual.com

Kelima :
Win : Restart Apache Anda, Start menu->Programs->Apache HTTP Server 2.0.58->Control Apache Server->Restart
FC : Restart Apache Anda dengan perintah : service httpd restart (pake konsole)

Terakhir :
Win & FC : Buka browser, ketikkan http://www.virtual.com, akan tampil sebuah halaman yang berada pada direktori F:/public_html/virtual.

Penutup :
